Fee for Day Use of Upper Newport Back Bay Coming Soon. But How?

According to a recent LA Times article, The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) will begin enforcing fees for use of the Upper Newport Back Bay Ecologial Preserve. This presumably includes the Back Bay trail which begins near Jamboree and ends near Newport Dunes. The trail surrounding the west side of the bay would also be affected. But how? Let’s just assume for now that the CDFW get their way and enforcement begins. To “enforce” a fee requirement and issue tickets for those not paying up (which I assume would be the majority of users), would require officers to be[…]

Strava Beacon Sucks

I have been a big fan of Strava since they started, so it comes with pain that I have to write this article. But seriously, somebody over at Strava needs to be fired. Strava recently introduced their “Beacon” feature available to premium subscribers. This feature is touted as a way for subscribers to be safer by letting friends and family track their activities in real-time. Really it’s just a way for Strava to get more people to pay up. I thought perhaps Strava had introduced a new device to compete with SPOT, but that’s not the case. Here’s where the[…]

Which Part of “No Trespassing” Do You Not Understand?

I’ve talked about some of the illegal trails in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park before (Marie Calendars and Lizards) and received some feedback like, “well there’s no sign saying you can’t go there” and “it’s on Strava” and “it’s on Google Maps – why wouldn’t you trust that?” A Recent Response from Park Rangers (2014) The park rangers made it clear that Marie Calendar’s is illegal by posting a sign at the top of it. But people still do it. Lizards remains unmarked at this point and it’s on Google Maps, so I kind of understand the “confusion” there. Do They[…]

Just Because It’s on Google Maps and Strava, Doesn’t Make it Legal

I’ve talked about the Marie Calendar’s trail before – an obviously illegal trail within Laguna Coast Wilderness Park that is now clearly marked at the top end.  But within the last few months, another trail in that area called Lizard’s has shown up on Google Maps.  It’s no wonder why so many people are doing the trail! Below is the trail marker and line for the Lizard’s trail on Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/Gfzaq And here is the segment for Lizard’s on Strava: http://www.strava.com/segments/4192875 To be even more clear, I’ve marked the illegal trails with arrows: Ignorance is Not an Excuse Remember,[…]

Top 19 Excuses to NOT Go Mountain Biking

No matter what time of the year, I’m bound to hear a plethora of excuses of why people can’t go mountain biking. I mean seriously, I think I’ve heard them all. I wouldn’t consider my list here an exhaustive one, but perhaps my all time favorites. So here we go folks. Have you ever caught yourself using one of these excuses? It’s too (hot/cold/wet, etc) to ride! The start time of the ride is too (early/late). My (fill in the blank) won’t let me go. My bike is in the shop (or my bike needs maintenance). Something I (ate/drank) last[…]
