I’m creating a new route through the Irvine and Newport Hills as well as checking out the new Buck Gully Trail. This is not a terribly hard ride, but given the overall distance and time factors, I wouldn’t recommend it for people who have not done long MTB rides with me before.
Here’s what I have in mind:
From the Newport Backbay, we’ll head toward and through UCI to Summit Park. At the top we’ll come down the sweet Turtle Ridge single track. Then we’ll ride up West Fork, passing under the 73 to reach Ridge Park (top of El Moro). We’ll head down Ridge Park to the Buck Gully trail and take that to PCH. From there we’ll be on the pavement for the rest of the way. We’ll head to the Back Bay and return on the bike path. Along the route through Corona Del Mar, we can stop for lunch.
Since I haven’t mapped the route yet, I’m guessing on the stats, but knowing the area I would say this is gonna be a tough ride but with some AWESOME views and a good mixture of downhill single tracks to make all the paved riding worth it. Count on about four hours in the saddle.
