If you’re into tracking your biking, hiking, or running stats, the Garmin Forerunner 405 is about the simplest way to go. It is extremely accurate and provides enough rechargeable battery time for a 4-6 hour ride. With the included USB power adapter and an optional 12v USB adapter for the car, I can charge the device on the go for my longer weekend trips. At home, the USB charger connects to either the included AC adapter, or any computer with an available USB port. The device is fully charged in a couple hours.
I have been using this handy wrist-based GPS device for over a year to track all my mountain bike rides. Included in the package is a Garmin’s USB ANT stick, which automatically and wirelessly connects the Garmin Forerunner 405 to my computer when in range (within about 30 feet).
Data is automatically transferred to my computer, and then automatically up to my free account at GarminConnect.com.
The GarminConnect.com website doesn’t just track GPS tracks. It also plots out your heart rate and gives you a virtual playback mode so that you can see how you were doing throughout your exercise. Depending upon which package you purchase, the Garmin Heart Rate Monitor may either be included, or purchased separately.
Data transferred to the website is stored in standard GPX format which can be shared with other Garmin devices and many other GPS units. You can also download Google Earth KML and KMZ files from the Garmin Connect as well as embed code for sharing your stats on your blog or other website.
Although you can load GPS tracks into the Garmin Forerunner 405, the screen size doesn’t make it the best navigation device. But data tracking couldn’t be better!
For road cyclists, the Garmin Forerunner 405 can also track cadence with an optional wireless cadence adapter. And of course, those stats would also be transferred to your free Garmin Connnect account.
Overall, if you’re looking for a fitness-tracking device that is simple to use and amazingly accurate, the Garmin Forerunner 405 packs the best features into a tiny package for a reasonable price!
I highly recommend this product.
