This route begins in the parking area of Bommer Canyon, which is open 7AM to Dusk daily. You can also park in nearby Turtle Rock Community Park, which is at 1 Sunnyhill, Irvine, CA which is open until 10PM daily. NOTE: When there’s a small parking area right by Shady Canyon Drive with a really nice brown driveway and bathrooms. This is the lot to use for public access in Bommer Canyon.
As you’ll see in the elevation profile below, after a brief ride through the meadows, you’ll climb 600′ West Fork, under the 73 freeway and to the back entrance of El Moro (Ridge Park Rd) in about 1 mile. That’s pretty steep, but worry not, except for a short climb out of Laurel Canyon (about 300′) West Fork is about the worst climbing you’ll do all day.
Overall, the ride is about 13.76 miles with 1,713′ of climbing. The route is about 50% dirt fire roads and 50% paved paths. You’ll get the best views possible of the City of Irvine, El Moro (and the ocean), Laguna Coast Park, and the City of Irvine.
Aside from the views, the fun part of this ride is coming down the Quail Trail where you 700′ of 3 miles of beautiful trails down to Quail Hill Community Park. And from there it’s an easy paved ride winding through the ever green Shady Canyon.
