The Trabuco Wash to the Holy Jim trail head route is about 12 miles round trip up and back, all fire road, and suitable for beginners. Over approximately 6 miles, you’ll hardly notice the 1273′ of elevation gain since it’s fairly gradual. And the return trip is all downhill!
About half of this ride is in the lower wide “wash” area, which has no tree cover and is frequented on the weekends by amateur 4×4 trucking enthusiasts. So be aware of cars and never assume that they’re going to safely pass. Eye contact with the drivers is the key to survival in this area!
About half-way into this ride, you enter a narrow shaded canyon with a stream running pretty much year round on your left. There are a few creek crossings in this area but if you keep your feet up you should remain mostly dry. If you start this ride early enough in the summer, the shade will keep you cool and if you really need to cool off more, you can go jump in the creek!
